Villa a Sesta

Villa a Sesta is a small quaint medieval village in the south of the Chianti region in Tuscany, between the walled village of San Gusmè, the ‘borgo’ San Felice and the Baronial ‘Castello del Brolio’. Villa a Sesta sits in the low Chianti hills, among vineyards and olive groves, with outstanding vistas toward the south dominated by the silhouette of Monte Amiata.

With a flavour of by-gone times the village hosts medieval houses, the “Master’s” Villa, a church and a traditional olive oil press. Scattered around the village along the hills are ancient farmhouses making one immediately feel the historical fascination of this unique place.

The heritage of this little village is remarkable. Of Etruscan origin, historical records show its existence here from the IX Century when it was owned by the Conti of the Berardenga. Later possesion passed to the Church and then on to the Baroni Ricasoli. Over the centuries the Village grew to its maximum expansion during the XVIII and XIX century when 296 inhabitants were documented in the year 1833.

Today Villa a Sesta presents itself to the traveller as a precious rare place to relax and immerse oneself in its tranquil charm invoking lifelong memories. This little gem has to be savoured with all the senses, the colours of the Terre di Siena and the Chianti hills, the scent of the countryside, the peace and quiet resounding amongst the walls of the medieval buildings and the deliciousness of the traditional Tuscan and ‘gourmet’ cooking offered by restaurants tucked among the houses.

Villa a Sesta restaurant As part of the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga (near Siena), it counts today, around fifty residents and, amazingly enough, four restaurants. Villa a Sesta could be considered the “gourmet” centre of this area, offering two Michelin star restaurants and two local Trattorie. Visitors can indeed be spoiled by the choice.

Although very small, the village’s lively community has over the years come together to create the most successful street food festival in the region, the “Dit’Unto” (literally translated, “greasy finger”). Once a year, on the first Sunday of each October, the best restauranteurs gather at Villa a Sesta, set up stalls around the village and each cooks one of their signature dishes. From Michelin starred restaurants to traditional Trattorie, the most exquisite dishes can be tasted accompanied by a glass of the local wine or a goblet of artisan beer ad music. One of the most recent Dit’Unto has attracted more than ten thousand visitors and served 43,000 dishes. An amazing result for such a small community who work together to make their little village known to the most discerning visitors.
